My approach

“Everyone is the author of their own stories” — this is the foundation of my counselling philosophy. I believe human connection is essential to healing, and that meaningful change begins in relationship. I prioritize a collaborative, respectful, and attuned therapeutic space where people can connect, heal, and grow.

I am a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC) and Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC). I earned my Master of Education in Counselling, where I developed my integrative therapeutic style, and hold a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Toronto, with majors in Psychology and Biology.

My work supports people in uncovering their inner strengths and unused resources, exploring new possibilities, and reconstructing a new chapter of their lives. Whether you’re navigating challenges or seeking deeper self-understanding, we’ll work together to make sense of what matters most.

My approach blends evidence-based therapies and oriental Zen philosophy.  Particularly, I draw from Mindfulness, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) — tailoring our work to your goals, values, and pace.

My story

It’s not always common (though not too rare) for counsellors to share personal stories — but I’d like to open a small window beyond my professional role.

Raised in the southern part of China, my childhood was filled with old Cantonese songs, animations, family gatherings, and humid summer days. I moved to the East Coast for education, where I encountered outdated subway trains, brutal winters, and romance like every teenager.

Now based on the West Coast, I work in private practice and partnered with a few clinics. As an immigrant settler, I gratefully acknowledge that I have the privilege to live and work on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Coast Salish peoples, otherwise known as Vancouver, British Columbia.

Like my footprints of growth, I drift as a migratory bird — settling for a while in different places to live and work, sometimes moving, always learning.

Testimonials

While I understand that psychology isn’t a magic fix and that I need to think and solve problems on my own, the support and insights from Mr. Shi have been instrumental in my journey.

Dr. L

Thanks for the companionship and guidance over the past three years. His counselling style is both sincere and incisive, objective yet full of warmth.I now navigate life with more ease, face challenges with greater clarity about my own needs, and experience less inner conflict. Life feels richer and more colorful because of it.

I had the privilege of working with Yee for a year during the most challenging period of my life. Throughout our sessions, he helped me analyze my problems and guided my thoughts towards effective solutions.

We reached out to Yee during a time when our daughter was struggling with anxiety and self-doubt. Over the years, we watched her grow more confident, open, and able to express herself in ways we hadn’t seen before. The change in her outlook and relationships has been truly meaningful. We are extremely appreciative of the role you played in her emotional development. Thank you.

A proud parent

I can’t quite believe how long it’s taken me to get to where I am today. If there’s one thing I’d like others to know as they walk through the door for counselling, it’s this: life can be tough—sometimes even brutal—but in the bigger picture, life is generous.

This marks the end of a difficult chapter for me, and I’m truly grateful for the support along the way. Thank you for being part of this journey—it was challenging, meaningful, and even fun at times.
