What is counselling?

Counselling is a collaborative process that supports change, healing, and personal growth. It offers a safe and confidential space to explore emotions, make sense of experiences, and build tools to navigate life’s challenges. A counsellor brings clinical training and empathy to help you understand the roots of your concerns, develop coping strategies, and reconnect with your inner strengths.

 

Similar to what you may have seen in media, a counselling session often involves two people sitting in chairs, talking to each other within a set amount of time. There might be tissues, a notebook, or moments of quiet reflection. While the setting may feel familiar, the content of each session can be deeply personal and varied. It may include talking through difficult emotions, learning new skills, or reflecting on patterns in your thoughts, behaviours, or relationships. Sessions can be held in person, online, by phone, or even outdoors — depending on what feels most supportive for you.

Where to begin?

Once you’ve decided to begin your counselling journey, the first step is often booking a free consultation to see if a counsellor feels like the right fit. During this conversation, you’re welcome to ask questions about their approach, experience, and how they work.

When you're ready to start, your first session may include sharing some background information—such as your contact details, mental health history, and what you hope to work on. It’s normal to feel nervous or unsure. If it helps, you can reflect on what’s bringing you in, what’s been feeling heavy or stuck, or what kind of support you’re looking for. Some people find it helpful to write down their thoughts or questions ahead of time, while others prefer to see where the conversation flows.

What to expect?

Counselling is a space to be heard, to reflect, and to grow — not only in times of crisis, but in the quieter moments when something inside you is asking for attention. It’s a process of uncovering patterns, strengthening emotional insight, and moving toward the life you want with greater clarity and care. You don’t need to be “broken” to begin. Sometimes, the most powerful work starts before things fall apart.
